Leg Ulcers

A broken skin on the lower leg or heel which exposes the tissue underneath is known as leg ulcers. Leg ulcers vary in color, size and depth. Most leg ulcers are caused due to poor blood circulation in the legs within the artery or veins. People with diabetes possess a higher risk of being infected to leg ulcers. People above the age of sixty and seventy generally tend be more infected to leg ulcer. Leg ulcers affect women more than men. Venous leg ulcer is type of skin ulcer which generally affects the area above the ankle. The skin usually is broken and the underlying flesh becomes visible. Generally this ulcer is not painful but at times they are painful. Increased pressure on the veins results in draining out of the fluid beneath the skin that causes swelling up, damaging or thickening of skin. Finally, the skin breaks out to form an ulcer. This ulcer is treated like any other wound that is it is cleaned and is dressed up by a nurse. But the ulcer is unlikely to heal by dressing it. There is always a risk of getting infected to the ulcer once it is healed so it is generally advised to take a preventive measure like wearing a compression stocking during the daytime so that it contracts the raised pressure in the veins.
